Global Asbestos Awareness Week April 1st to April 7th 2023
Inhalation of asbestos fibres can cause several serious diseases, such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and pleural thickening, and all these diseases worsen over a long period of time.
- There are over 5,000 asbestos-related disease deaths per year, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
- Mesothelioma takes years to develop following the inhalation of asbestos fibres. It is almost always fatal, and often within 12 months of the onset of symptoms.
- During 2020, in Great Britain, there were 2,544 deaths from mesothelioma.
- Around 2/3rd of deaths occur in those aged over 75 years.
- In 2021, 1,920 new cases of mesothelioma were assessed for the Industrial Disablement Benefit.
